A class action lawsuit occurs when one or more people who feel that they have been wronged sue purportedly on behalf of a larger group. Usually, class action lawsuits are only approved when there are many people affected by a certain issue and it makes more sense try their cases together. Examples of class action lawsuits with news-making settlements include: -a 2005 case in which AOL Time Warner stock investors sued the company for federal securities fraud, resulting in a $2.5 billion settlement -a silicone breast implant case in 1994 in which women claimed they suffered from autoimmune diseases because of their implants, resulting in Corning, Baxter, and Bristol-Meyers Squibb/MEC settling for $3.4 billion -a 2001 case involving the Exxon Valdez oil spill that affected thousands of people and an extensive expanse of coastline, which ended in a $500 million settlement with Exxon Mobile.
